How to read your effective rate
Your effective rate is total fees divided by total card sales. It's the one number that lets you compare any two providers, whatever their pricing looks like.
- Interchange goes to the bank that issued your customer's card. Visa and Mastercard publish the rates, and they're the same no matter which processor you use. Visa's published fees
- Debit cards usually cost less than credit cards. Debit from large banks has a federal cap on interchange. Federal Reserve, Regulation II
- Online and keyed-in sales usually cost more than tapped or dipped cards, because the risk of fraud is higher.
- The processor's own fees are the part you can shop around. If your statement shows them separately, that number is the one to compare.
